Writing Story

Hey there, we were told to start a story with the sentence "It wasn't unusual for Sam to wake up terrified." We were also told to make sure every letter of the alphabet was included.

It wasn’t unusual for Sam to wake up terrified, he often had strange night terrors. They were usually about aliens or strange creatures. But after all they were just dreams, Sam decided to get out of his bed to get a glass of water. The water was extremely relaxing for poor old Sam. He then shrugged his way back to bed like a slug but as he walked in there was a bright light shining through his curtains. He opened the window but as soon as he did he saw an odd silhouette of what looked to be a vicious animal. He could tell it was an animal but couldn’t distinguish what animal it was. “Wh- Who are you?” Sam whimpered to the strange creature. “What a strange question, you know who I am…”  Sam now realized it was the zombie creature from his dreams.. He panicked and grabbed the closest object he could find and used it to guard himself.

Paralized with fear, he now ran into his kitchen. It turns out the object he grabbed was just his hockey stick. The monster was standing in the centre of his living room, Sam charged at the monster and took a chunk out of his head. The monster jumped back and tried to scratch Sam but it had no effect, Sam had unlocked something inside him, something powerful. He stabbed the beast through the chest and the beast dissolved into dust.

Sam, sleeping peacefully in his bed woke up to the sound of his alarm. He was confused why his hockey stick was still in the corner of his room and when he got back into bed, the last thing he remembers is fighting that beast. He walked out to the living room but everything was as if nothing happened at all. Was it a figment of his imagination or is it still lurking in the shadows, waiting for its next victim...

Workshop 3: How to do 'Lighting & Colour' enhance the story?

Atmosphere / Mood - how we feel watching the scene

Warm - makes us feel comfortable, safe, welcoming.

Cold -  feels sterile, clean, futuristic, technological.

Bright - feels more lively, energised, vibrant.

Dull - feels calm, quiet, boring, old.

Natural - sources are sun / moon, feels like real life.

Artificial - man made sources, feels unnatural.

Pallet - the colours used in that shot, e.g nature pallet will have colours like browns / greens.


* The scene where August cried to his mum about looking different.
- They don't even talk to me
- My face is ugly
- Is it always going to matter
- Auggies mum goes not his room to check on him. He tell her others make fun of him and she reassures him.

- Theme - importance of friends and family.

Shots / Angles -  close ups used to show Auggies emotions.
- over the shoulder when mum speaks to show the conversation from Auggies point of view.

Lighting / Colour -  warm dark colour -  this is a safe and comfortable space for Auggie to cry.
- dull colours - sad, lonely, sympathetic, calm, quiet.
- natural light - its nighttime.

Effect on the viewer - Sympathetic, sad, sorry, lonely, depressed, miserable, downhearted, forlorn.

Directors Purpose - emphasises the sadness of the moment and the importance of Auggies relationship with his family.

In the scene where Auggie cries to his mother about being bullied,  colour and lighting is used to create an atmosphere of sympathy. We see this through the use of warm and dull colours in the shot.
These make the space feel safe and comfortable for Auggie to express his emotions. This makes us understand how Auggie is feeling; miserable, oppressed and depressed because he looks different from his peers. He asks his mum, "will it always matter" which is a feeling most in the audience can relate too. This was done to show the importance of friendship and family, because Auggie learns resilience by talking issues through with his mum. Combined with this is the use of close-up shots to show the emotions and tears on Auggies face. This reminds the viewer of a moment later in the story where Auggie is upset because his sister Via doesn't want him to go to her play.  Just like this scene, Auggie runs to his room upset and a member of his family comes to reassure him.

Self Directed Learners Matrix

Hey there, here is my self directed learner matrix for this week.
  
This week I want to complete all my work to the best it can be.

Kindness - verbal/physical action that is nice, caring, using manners, respect.

Example 1: When Jack sticks up for Auggie during the fight scene with Julian .
                - Shows kindness - sticking up for a friend
                - Not letting others talk badly about friends.
                - Jack has previously not been kind, talked about Auggie behind his back.

                -  Important because - helps people make friends
                                                 - builds a persons self confidence
                                                 - makes people feel accepted / included
                                                 - if there wasn't kindness Auggie wouldn't
                                                  have made any friends, grown his self confidence,
                                                  be able to take off his helmet, feel included at Beaker prep
Example 2: When Amos and the others help Jack and Auggie fight the 7th graders.



The Importance of Family and Friendship - trust, trust of others, support systems, people you feel safe with, help build resilience.

Example 1: When the Pullamn's dog Daisy dies.
                   - Shows theme - Brings family together to grieve
                   - Show support for on another.
                    - Auggie and Via put aside their argument to look after each other.

Example 2: The fight at the Nature Reserve where Amas and the other boys come together to rescue Jack and Auggie fro the 7th graders.
 - Show theme - support because they stand up for each other
                   -  trust the boys come to help them, they don't abandon each other
                   - resilience - the boys support support each other to move forward, they are all friends now.
Important to the Story-  good relationships with friends help build trust and feel safe. He takes the helmet off.
                   - His friendship with Summer teaches him resilience, trust and forgiveness.
                   - His family are always there to support him when things go wrong at school.

Struggle between being right and being popular - being right means showing integrity - doing the right thing even when no one is watching.
- being popular means agreeing with/acting in a way others want you to, even when you don't agree.

Example 1 - when Jack chose to stay with Auggie as his science partner instead of Julian.
- Shows theme - Jack chose right over popular. Julien wanted to leave Auggie out and Jack chose not to.
- in the past Jack had picked friendship with Julian over Auggie.

Example 2 - When Summer decides to sit with Auggie instead of the girls who were talking behind Auggies back.

Shows theme - Summer chose right - not to sit and talk nasty with her friends, but to go and sit with Auggie who was alone.
- Auggie doesn't trust her at firs tbecause of Jack, Summer stays anyways and helps Auggie - link to importance of friendships.

Important to the story - the concept is relatable, everyone has to experience  this so it helps the viewer engage with the story.
- makes kindness / relationships more obvious when we've seen the persons struggles.

Reflection about our previous lesson.

Last lesson in health we were in groups and had to teach the class a game. My group didn't get to teach our game but here are the games we learnt.

First we played a game that our teacher taught us and we had to bounce a ping pong ball on the table into a plastic cup. Sonny and I versed Paeae and Levi. We tied.

We then played a game where you had to throw a water balloon to a partner and try to not pop it. We did quite good until Sonny popped the balloon. 

After we played a game where you were in a group and had string attached to a rubber band, we then had to take a plastic cup to the other side of the room without dropping it. My group failed a lot but we managed to get one cup across so thats at least something!

I displayed confidence when we dropped the cup I said we should still try instead of giving up.

In conclusion we had a lot of fun and learn't a lot about kindness and confidence.

Curiosity Quest

Hey there! Here is another curiosity Quest.


I wonder who created the idea of zombies?

The ancient Greeks might of been the first civilisation to have a fear of the undead, Archaeologists have found lots of ancient graves which have skeletons pinned down by rocks and other heavy objects to presumably prevent them from reanimating. Even though its rare there have been several reports in medical journals of people reviving people from the grave. There was a woman who appeared to be dead in a family tomb who reappeared three years later, they found her tomb was full of stones when they next checked it. But from the 1980s zombies were heavily featured in pop culture and as special effects technology evolved the zombies became more and more realistic.
