Physical or Chemical Change (Heating ZnO)

Physical or Chemical Change

(Heating ZnO)

Hypothesis

 Explosion =  Chemical Change

Equipment

Sample of ZnO (Zinc oxide)

Heat source - Hot plate

Scales

Heatproof container - evaporating dish

Tongs

Heat proof mat

Method

1. Get sample of ZnO in an evaporating dish

2. Weigh the ZnO & container - record weight

3. Heat container & ZnO on hot plate

4. Observe any changes - use phone for before & after photos (Video?

5. Take of heat & put om heat proof mat

6.  Let cool - observe - photos

7. Re weigh

Results

The ZnO turned slightly yellow and let off a burnt smell. It weighed 57 grams at the beginning and it did not change after we heated it.

Conclusion:

This leads me to believe that the change was physical as it did change back to its original state. Our hypothesis of it exploding was incorrect as it instead had only little change.
