Corrosion Experiment

Corrosion

Aim: To investigate the factors that cause rusting and how to prevent it.

Equipment: Eight test tubes, test tube rack, a bung, eight iron nails, boiled water, salt water, tap water, calcium chloride, cooking oil, vaseline, paint, zinc.

Method:

1. Label all the test tubes A - H and place them in a test tube rack.

A = Nail

B = Nail + Water

C = Nail + Salt Water

D = Nail + Boiled water + oil

E = Nail + CaCL + Bung

F = Nail + Vaseline + water

G = Nail + paint + water

H = Nail + Zn + water

3. Leave the test tubes undisturbed for at least three days.

Hypothesis

I think that D - H will be mostly protected from corrosion and A-C will be the most affected.

Outcome

A- The nail corroded a bit but not as much compared to the others.

B- The water is filled with rust particles and the nail has got rusted.

C - Visually this look similar to the

D- It has rusted a little bit

E- Barley any rusting has occurred if any.

F- Rust has built up around the bottom.

G- The paint has protected the nail pretty well.

H- A lot of rust has built up around the nail
