Yellow Brick Road

   Pre-reading Questions

Author Witi Ihimaera is from Gisborne. Five of his books, The Whale Rider, Bulibasha: King of the Gypsies, Nights of the Gardens of Spain, White Lies, and Maori have been made into films.

To me the Yellow Brick Road is like a road to glory, I have heard of the phrase from the Wizard of Oz movie.

I predict this story will be about following the road to something great and the journey along the way.

Post-reading Questions

The narrator believes that they are moving to Wellington because things will be different and they will make lots of money because Wellington is where the money is.

The main difference (stated on page 1) between Waituhi and Wellington is that there is a lot of pakeha in Wellington and not many in Waituhi.

The reason that they are moving to Wellington is that there are no more jobs back home in Waituhi but there is plenty of work in Wellington and they want a better quality of life.

As the story ends the narrator slowly loses excitement and gets more and more nervous about moving.

The author made numerous references to the book and movie Wizard of Oz in this short story, such as referring to their trip as going along the yellow brick road since in the book the yellow brick road is a path to your dreams and wishes. They also refer to Wellington as the Emerald City but in the books, the Emerald City isn't as glamorous as it seems and that the real change has to come from themselves.
